How To Install Electrical Outlet Above Fireplace

Writer Gabriel Cooper

Placing your television above the fireplace emanates a sense of refined sophistication. In a modern home, it is likely that drywall will be installed over conventional wood studs or furring strips on the walls above the fireplace. Furring strips are only an inch or two broad, whereas studs are often constructed of 2x4s.

Both of these options are excellent for mounting a television, but if you intend to run cables through the wall, make sure you have classic wood studs installed. You’ll have more space to run wires or install wall grommets if you do so. Furring strips are incompatible with the majority of cable management solutions because they are too tiny.

In either case, drywall with wood supports will make the task of mounting a television over the fireplace far easier. Any TV mount can be installed on any wall in the same way as any other. Before selecting the amount, you’ll need to determine whether you require lateral shift (the flexibility to slide and center the mount) and whether you have traditional studs or furring strips in your installation. If there is brick above the fireplace, you may be able to construct an amount; however, we cannot recommend this because we do not know the quality of the brick. For brick installations, make sure you drill into the concrete brick itself, rather than the cement itself.

Tilt mounts are the best choice for installation over the fireplace. Their thin profile gives them a streamlined appearance and tilting them down increases the viewing angle while reducing glare. It can be difficult to reach cords that are hidden behind a tilt mount, and the tilting motion may be restricted if you have a particularly large television. With the intention of installing a fireplace in mind.
