How to make a hole in wood without a drill

Writer Ethan Hayes

You can make a hole in wood without a drill. But before we get to the real answer here, we will have to think about the options you have.

To make a hole in wood without a drill, you can use the following options:

1. Drill then hammer

If there are no other tools available, you can build up speed by drilling into something soft with the drill bit itself. When you have enough speed to cut through the hard material, drop it through and it should make a nice hole in your piece of wood. This will work for small holes but not really large ones.

2. Use heat

A lighter or blowtorch is used to heat metal fasteners on their pointy ends which are then pressed against the wood in question with force until they stick through, creating a hole that way without any drill needed at all. You can also use a soldering iron for this if it’s available.

3. Use an awl

An awl is a type of “starter” tool. That means, when you have no drill, you can start to make holes in your piece of wood with the tip by hammering on the handle end. It will be easier than using nothing at all but still not nearly as easy as having an actual drill around. The difficult part about using something like an awl is that you cannot go too fast or too slow when making these types of holes because they don’t go easy and all require quite some energy to create them in the larger pieces of wood.

4. Use brute strength

That might work in certain scenarios but as you saw above, those holes won’t always be possible to make. Solid wood pieces can become quite hard and getting a hole made fast takes some persistence. Use the saw method first and then go into brute strength if that doesn’t work. If none of the 4 options above worked for you, then search for another power drill here:
