Many have spent hours trying to figure out how to make a quiet muffler for a small engine. The best way is to buy one made for the application. But if you want to make your own, it’s not that hard. If you have an old lawnmower or another small engine, you can use it as long as it has at least 1/4 inch pipe going into it (or 1/2 inch if you are using muffler packing). You will need a tail pipe, too, but that can be from any source. The size of the tailpipe is not critical as long as it is large enough to hold the packing material tightly against the end of the muffler tube. Here’s how to do it.

Steps to make a quiet muffler for a small engine

First cut off both ends of the muffler tube with a hacksaw and then file off any burrs where they join together; this makes them fit better when they are attached together with hose clamps. Next put on two hose clamps (one on each end) so that they form an “X” across the top of both muffler tubes.. The basic idea behind this muffler is to use multiple chambers to slow down the flow of exhaust gases, which reduces noise.

The chambers are separated by baffles that help direct the flow into different chambers. The baffles also help increase turbulence in the chamber, which increases mixing and cooling two factors that reduce noise. The goal here is to provide a relatively inexpensive muffler for small engine applications that increases the sound damping of the engine and thus makes it much quieter. While this might not be for everyone, if you have a small engine project where you want to add an exhaust but also keep it as quiet as possible, you will find this little muffler can do the trick while keeping costs down.
