How to make skate wax out of candles

Writer Sarah Silva

It’s very possible to make state wax out of candles but you need to follow the steps carefully. To make skate wax, I follow these steps:

1. Buy 1-2 pounds of beeswax and 1 pound of tallow (beef fat) from the grocery store or farm market. You can use beef tallow in place of tallow if you want. Do not get lard — it won’t work! The beeswax may be found in the pharmacy section, and the tallow can be found near the butter.

2. Get a big metal pot (a very large soup pot)

3. Break up or grate about 6-10 beeswax candles into powder. You can use any kind of wax candle – birthday candles, etc., but I prefer to get beeswax candles because they are stronger and last longer when made into skate wax.

4. Put approx 2 cups of hot water in your pot (it helps melt the beeswax if you’ve heated it), and place on medium heat

5. Add 1 cup beef tallow or 1/2 cup beef tallow + 1/2 cup coconut oil to the pot

7. Add 6-10 crumbled-up beeswax candles (or one big candle). The more candles you add, the more wax you will get out of it – but if too much beeswax is added, your wax will be tacky and not smooth enough to apply properly.

8. After adding all of the ingredients stir occasionally until completely melted together (about 30 min)

9. Let cool for about 10 min, stirring occasionally while cooling

10. Put in a container with a lid (I like these Rubbermaid Tupperware containers) or pour into ice cube molds (like these, sold at Walmart) to make individual “skate cubes” which can be used as-is or broken up

11. Enjoy! Use wax for skates, or candle stubs for heating and reheating to keep your wax smooth and easy to use.
