How To Paint An Engine Block

It can be tedious to paint the engine block and it is not something you would want to do again.

Even if your engine is being completely rebuilt, it’s a good idea to get the grease, grime and rust off first. Start with a stainless steel wire brush to remove the bulky stuff. You can then use a drill to create a cylindrical brush and get into those tight spaces that a standard wire brush cannot reach.
To get to the metal, you can use Chassis Kleen. You can see the clean, bare metal and you will be able to narrow down on difficult-to-reach places. Paint won’t stick on grease so it must be removed.
After the engine block has been cleaned, you will need to prepare it for coatings. You must first remove any oil or gasket bearing surfaces. You can protect these areas with masking tape or masking papers. To give the primer a smooth surface to attach to, any smooth surfaces must be scuffed.
Although an engine block isn’t as hot as the exhaust system, it still needs to be coated with quality engine coatings. This will ensure that the paint lasts for many years. To seal the engine block and make it ready for color, we recommend using a High-Temp Engine Primer. A single coat will usually seal a block. However, multiple coats are possible to fill in imperfections and smoothen out the surface to give the block a glossy look.
To give you the best durability, you can use 2K Ceramic Engine paints. These paints are the same quality as paint guns, and have the same finish. They are activated 2K paint so they are just as durable. Select the best color for your project, and then apply 2-3 coats to get full coverage. Clear coats are not necessary unless the engine needs a high gloss finish. Once your engine has been painted and detailed, you can now install it.
