How To Prep For Hydroseeding?

Writer Gabriel Cooper

Hydroseeding is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed and mulch. It is often used as an erosion control technique on construction sites, as an alternative to the traditional method of broadcasting or sowing dry seeds. Hydroseeding is a great way to get new grass, whether starting from scratch or reseeding bad patches on your lawn. It’s fast, easy, and much less expensive than sodding. You can also use hydro seeded plants to create a green buffer between your property and any natural or manmade areas nearby. Our friends at Kubota have put together this video showing the basics of preparing for hydroseeding.

Soil prep

Having your soil ready is crucial before you put in the seed. If you’re installing a new yard, it may be best to wait until after the sod has been laid down, as this will allow for a more even and consistent layer of topsoil. However, if you are doing a hydroseeding project on an existing lawn that has been growing for some time, it’s a good idea to prep for hydroseeding beforehand.

If your soil is dry and compacted, there isn’t enough room for water absorption and, therefore, won’t be able to hold onto any nutrients applied from aeration or fertilization. You’ll want to ensure that your soil is loose and free of large rocks; also, check whether any roots from existing plants or trees are buried there. They will need to be removed, so they don’t compete with new growth once you’ve seeded!

Prepare the Hydroseed Mix

The mix will be moist enough if it’s the consistency of wet sand or about as thick as you could spread with a spoon. If the hydroseed mix is too dry, water it down and add some moisture to it. You may need to let some water drain away before you continue spreading the hydroseed so that it remains workable.

If you have access to a large amount of water from a hose, use that instead of watering cans or buckets (if possible).

Prepare and Prime the Site

The first thing you’ll need to do is prepare the site. This includes removing debris and cleaning the area to be seeded. You want to remove any clippings or grass clumps, so they don’t block seeds from reaching the soil.

The next step is priming with a hydroseed primer, then applying fertilizer over the top of it. The primer will help keep weeds from sprouting up through your new lawn while also nourishing it for healthy growth once you spread it over top of it with seed.

Conclusion

Hydroseeding is an excellent option for landscaping. It’s a cost-effective way to install grass and can work well in large areas or areas with poor soil. It can also be used on slopes, making it perfect for steep hillsides where other methods might cause erosion and runoff.
