How To Remove Diesel Stains From Clothes

Writer Gabriel Cooper

As diesel is less refined, it has a strong odor due to its chemical composition. The nitrogen and sulfur compounds cause the stench you notice when you pump diesel fuel or are near someone who works with diesel. Some people prefer the smell of diesel because it is pleasant. Diesel stains are notoriously tough to get out of clothes.

It’s particularly risky if you haven’t been able to properly remove the stains. Keep in mind that stains might make the fabric more flammable, so treat the items with caution. If you have “dry clean only” clothing with a diesel stain, take it to the dry cleaner as soon as possible to identify the stain. Remember that using a home laundry service kit on clothing that has been soiled with diesel fuel or kerosene is not recommended.

Let’s have a look at how to remove fuel stains from clothing. Pre-treat the stain’s location. Pretreat the area with a solvent-based stain or an enzyme-based liquid detergent. Begin by gently rubbing the stain spot with a soft-bristled brush to work in the remedy. Allow at least fifteen minutes for the product to take effect.

Remove the clothing and wash it. Wash the item as directed on the care label, using the warmest water recommended for the fabric. Make a thorough inspection of the garment for stains and smells. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

Soaking for 24 hours is recommended. If there is indeed a residual gasoline odor, this is an alternative measure. Soak the soiled clothing in enough water to completely immerse it, as well as a cup of baking soda, overnight. As normal, wash the clothing.

If there is no residual odor, hang the clothing to dry or hang it on a clothesline. To assist eliminate the stink, air-dry outside is one alternative. If the stink persists, air-dry the items indoors on a drying rack or clothesline. Drying the item in an electric or gas dryer is not advised.
