The next step is to remove the metal pin securing the heater control panel to the gear stick. You must take out the metal pin from the hole near the gear stick. You may use any type of screwdriver or even knife depending on the fit inside for this task. Just be careful not to scratch your plastic parts while doing this. Some models have a special rubber cap used instead of a metal pin explained here. If yours does, then just skip the next paragraph.

Use a punch or old screwdriver to remove the metal pin from your e46 gear knob. If you have a rubber cap, then just cut it off with a sharp knife.

Once you succeeded in removing the pin. You should be able to see two countersunk screws on either side of your e46 gear knob connection shafts. Unscrew both of them (6mm Allen key). Once done, pull out the knob by grabbing the inside part of it.

If you want to re-use your original BMW badge – make sure to clean the metal shaft with alcohol and let it dry before attaching the badge back on. The best way to find out is to take the old knob off and measure its diameter. Once you have a new gear knob, reattach the original badge if you want to, or leave it off for a different look. Screw in the two countersunk screws using a 6mm Allen key.
