How To Reset Check Engine Light On Chevy Silverado

Writer Ethan Hayes

On a Chevy Silverado, this technique may be used to reset the check engine light. Many people have experienced a check engine light that came on but was caused by a gas cap that had been improperly sealed. Take the car off the road, take the cap off, tighten it and drive for a few more miles. Your check engine light will go off automatically if it is just picking up gas fumes. It’s best to pull your vehicle over immediately if the check engine light turns on simultaneously with another problem, such as an overheating car.

You should not attempt to reset the check engine light if the gas cap is not the problem. While you might be able to purchase a Chevrolet diagnostic instrument, most drivers prefer to speak to an expert before taking any action. You should visit our service center if your check engine light turns on again after performing a manual reset.

Two Methods to Reset the Check Engine Light

You’ve made up your mind that you’ll have to learn how to reset your check engine light by yourself. The check engine light may be reset with only a few rotations on certain models.

Next, disconnect the negative battery cable from your vehicle and force your electronic systems (and in-vehicle diagnostics), to do a hard reset. The steps are as follows:

  • Turn off the engine and put on your safety equipment.
  • Locate the minus terminal. A black hat with a negative/minus sign at the top is typical.
  • Loosen the bolt using a wrench before disconnecting the cable. Then disconnect the battery’s negative connection.
  • After removing the negative battery cable, make sure it is kept secure so that it does not touch any other terminals or cause sparks. For a few seconds, hold it at the side.
  • Connect the negative cable. Be careful! Use your wrench to tighten the top and ensure that the cap is in the correct place.

If the check engine light comes on again when you drive, it could be a more serious problem that needs to be addressed.
