How to stop rats climbing drain pipes

Writer Gabriel Cooper

An urban legend states that we can never be more than 6 feet from a rat. This myth could be true, with estimates ranging from 3-10 million rats living in the UK. These are the most common signs that rats have infested your home: Rat droppings Walls, bins, rubbish, or doors are full of whole-bodied gnaws Scratching in the roof or under the floorboards Nests Make sure food items are not left unattended Do not leave pet food for too long To reduce the possibility of rats residing in your garden, keep it clean and remove all clutter Don’t leave the clutter behind on the building’s side for too long Place garbage in containers with a lid Seal all entry points to the property. To stop rats from clogging your sewer pipes, install a drain-non-return valve Seal any cracks under doors and check for gaps.

Rats love drains and it is best to put a rat-blocker in place to keep them out. Rats can climb on soil pipes and around toilet U-bends. It is a simple task to close the lid of the toilet. You might be surprised! A non-return valve that has a single flap is the best protection for drains. This prevents rats from getting into the drain pipes and your home.

The main route that rats use to enter your property is from the soil pipe leading to the inspection chamber. Installing a non-return fitting on the sewer pipe to the inspection chamber will stop rats from getting into your property via the sewage system. Both mice and rats use drainage pipes or the sewage system to get into buildings. Install floor drains with metal grates that are securely fastened in place. Use grate openings less than 1/4 inch in width and made of 19-gauge wire. Rats can also enter buildings via the plumbing of the toilet. Although this is rare, it does happen. Unfortunately, the rat guard (a product that stops rats from entering toilets) is no longer in production. This problem is best addressed by the local sanitation and health department.
