In an emergency, parrot leg bands can be removed with cutters, and wire or a toy can be cut to free a bird that has become entangled. In order to remove bands from smaller species, ring cutters made of steel are used Birds of prey, such as parrotlets and budgies. To securely close “open” bands, you’ll need open band pliers.

Can I take my birds leg band off?

As soon as a chick hatches, breeders apply closed (solid) rings or bands while its foot is still small enough to pass through. The leg band cannot be removed unless it is cut off as the bird grows.
