How to teach a toddler to roller skate
Gabriel Cooper
Teaching a toddler to roller skate may be harder than you think, but it is worth the effort. Once your child has learned how to ride on skates, he will want to do it over and over again. When teaching a toddler to roller skate, you should take into consideration that children learn in different ways at different speeds. Some learn quickly, but others need to be taught more slowly.

If he is physically able and old enough to sit up on his own without support, then he may be ready for the task at hand. Your child will also need to have some fine motor skills before learning how to ride on skates. He should be able to manipulate toys easily so that he can teach himself how to put on the skates properly. If you notice that your toddler is having trouble holding onto things or grasping objects, then roller skating might not be a good activity for him just yet.
Toddlers vary in their balance abilities, and you need to be aware of this fact when attempting to teach them how to ride on skates. Some toddlers will naturally feel very comfortable on roller skates while others will take a little more time. If you notice that your toddler seems to be struggling with balance issues, then it is best to wait until he has fully developed his skills in this area before introducing him to roller skating.
To begin teaching your child how to roller skate, find the right pair of skates for him. It is important for your child’s safety that the skates are properly sized so they do not fall off when he begins moving around in them. Proper fitting shoes mean less slippage and better performance while skating.
Once you have determined it is okay for your toddler to begin learning how to ride on skates, it is time for some physical preparation activities. Start off by doing some simple exercises with your children like jumping jacks or squats. Introduce balance board exercises gradually as well. Your little one should begin strengthening his ankles, hips, and knees so that he will be able to stand up on the roller skates. Make sure you show your toddler how to do squats with the correct form. Use proper posture by pushing your hips back behind you while bending over at the knee joints.
