Timing is everything when it comes to getting the most performance out of your car. If you don’t make sure that the timing is correct, then you could end up with problems like overheating and poor fuel economy. So how do you get it right? It’s actually quite simple to do once you know what to do. Here’s what you need to know about timing your 460 Ford engine:

1. Get your chassis tachometer reading first.
2. Remove the timing belt cover by removing the two 10mm bolts on top.
3. Remove the timing belt and idler pulley using a 8mm socket with extension, or an 11mm socket with extension and a puller.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt (10mm) and remove the crankshaft pulley from the flywheel using a puller.
5. Loosen idler arm bolt (13mm) and remove bearing from flywheel using puller, then remove bearing from crankshaft using puller and arbor press (or ratchet & extension).
6. Remove water pump pulley (16x1mm bolt), then remove water pump support plate under radiator support plate, then remove water pump assembly from engine bay.

This article has discussed how to properly time a 460 Ford engine. It’s surprisingly complicated and if your timing is off by even a little bit, you’ll know about it when one of the cylinders starts knocking. The components I’ve referenced were all available in the early to mid 80s and are still used on 460s today with some upgraded versions. A mechanical centrifugal-advance distributor was used back then with vacuum and advance options. There was no EEC-IV like there is today, but opti-spark ignition did come along later.
