How to turn electric back on

Writer David Wilson

There are countless switches out there and so the process of turning the electricity back on can vary from switch to switch. Before even attempting any of these steps, always make sure you turn off the circuit breakers and know which ones do what before attempting anything.

Procedure:

If you don’t already know where your main breaker box is located, go find it ASAP. Once found, go to the main breaker for the area you are in (if unsure what areas control what, check your electric bill. It should state on there what area each breaker controls.) Place a flat head screwdriver across both metal prongs on one side of the blade. Take another screwdriver or some other long tool that will reach across the entire blade and touch both sides at once (make sure that electricity comes into contact with this! I do not suggest trying to hold it with your hand) be very careful, electricity can hurt you badly.

When the breaker is popped loose it should fall out of the hole in the box. This process varies per power system so make sure you are doing this for your specific type. If you don’t have a clue what I am talking about, just try reaching across one side at a time with two screws and see if that works instead!

Once out, flip all switches on that circuit off then wait 60 seconds before turning them back on one by one until the area comes back up. If something isn’t working after flipping a switch on or off, turn off the breaker again and look specifically at why it didn’t work. Once determined, make sure all switches are returned to the off position and go to the next one manually.

Remember, electricity is very dangerous. This can teach you how to turn your area back on but it doesn’t replace experience. Electricity never turns itself off so if someone in your home doesn’t know how to do this, just have them call an electrician.
