The 3126 is a big block engine that has been used in all kinds of applications, from work trucks, to RV’s and even race cars. The 3126 is a popular engine for hot rodders. It has a reputation for being very tunable. The basic block and heads are the same. The only difference is the camshaft and intake manifold (and sometimes the carburetor). So you can use this information on any 3126 engine.
The first thing you want to do is make sure your timing marks line up correctly! You don’t want to be cranking over the engine and have it fire up with no compression. Make sure your camshaft marks are lined up with top dead center (TDC) on the number one cylinder spark plug wire.
Now let us talk about how much power we can expect from our little 3126 cat engines. Most people will say 400hp is about all you’re going to get out of these small blocks as far as more horsepower goes. That’s not true! These little guys will produce more power than most people think if you know what you’re doing. I’ve seen some guys get close to 500hp out of these things with stock heads and intake manifolds! The key here is building it right and making sure everything fits right before installing them on your car or truck!
The big problem with this engine is that it’s not naturally aspirated. It comes from the factory with a turbocharger and intercooler. If your car has an automatic transmission, you also need to be aware that there is no reverse gear in first gear with this combination; so don’t try putting it in first gear while moving forward! And never shift into neutral while moving.
It’s not just for brute force! The 3126 is designed to maximize efficiency in terms of fuel consumption and power.
Revising the injection system so it’s able to function at 100% for all operating conditions is a key component of tuning, as this allows you to take advantage of its full potential from low-RPM cruising to aggressive WOT operation. In addition, the injector revision will produce a more responsive engine at low RPMs, making slow speed maneuvers easier on the engine since it will keep running, rather than stalling out.
