How To Weave A Basket With Palm Leaves

Writer Gabriel Cooper

Have you ever seen a beautiful basket for sale and wished you could make something like it at home? What if I told you that, with some palm leaves and a little bit of weaving know-how, you can create your own beautiful basket from scratch? Of course, this task isn’t as easy as it sounds. With the palm leaves alone, there’s a lot of prep work that has to be done. But if you’re willing to put in the time and follow these steps carefully, then making your own woven baskets is entirely possible (even for beginners).

To start making a basket, you will need:

  • A needle to make holes in the leaves. Smaller needles are easier to use but harder to find.
  • Leaves from several different types of palms, including buri and coconut palms (not fan palms), palmyra, pandan, and talipot palms.

Gather, dry, and roll palm leaves.

First, find a palm tree and carefully cut its leaves. Make sure to wear protective clothing and eye goggles. Once all the leaves are off the tree, lay them down in a dry place so they can dry out over 24 hours. Next, roll each leaf into a cylindrical shape for weaving purposes.

Weave the walls of your basket.

  • Take a piece of palm leaf and fold it into an L shape.
  • Take another piece of palm leaf, and fold it in half lengthwise to make a strip of equal width to the one you just made in step 1 (you can use string or tape if you don’t have enough leaves around).
  • Weave your strips together with the first one folded into an L shape by weaving them through each other at 90-degree angles, as shown below:

Conclusion

We hope this guide has helped you learn how to make your own basket. This is a useful craft that can come in handy for storing items around the house or giving as gifts. The best thing to do now is get started on making one yourself!
