Is aquarium salt safe for snails?
Caleb Butler
Aquarium salt can be used to treat many diseases in freshwater aquarium fish, but is it safe for snails? Salt has been used since ancient times to promote health and prevent disease. Today, aquarium salt is used to treat several diseases in tropical fishes. While there are benefits of using aquarium salt, it should not be used indiscriminately.

Aquarium salt is a form of sodium chloride (NaCl). The use of aquarium salt as a treatment for freshwater fish diseases was first discovered in the 1950s. It was found that even small concentrations of sodium chloride could be used to treat certain fish diseases.
Fish Housed with Snails
If you have freshwater aquarium fish, snails may come with them in the tank. Or, they may show up on their own or with live plants that are added to an existing tank. If your freshwater fish are plagued by disease, it is important to quarantine the snails. This is especially important if your fish are housed with cichlids, which tend to be aggressive toward other organisms in the tank.
How can I Prevent Diseases in my Aquarium?
You should start with healthy fish and monitor water conditions closely. If you notice anything suspicious, check for salinity levels of your water. If you are using tap water, make sure it is treated with a commercially available water conditioner that removes chloramines and chlorine. These substances are dangerous to fish. Some hobbyists think putting aquarium salt in the tank can prevent diseases. This is not true.
If your freshwater fish have fallen ill, please check the salinity levels of your tank. The salinity levels should be the same as that of seawater, which is 35 parts per thousand (ppt).
In normal conditions, aquarium salt does not harm snails. However, if you have a snail infection, it may worsen the problem. If you have snails in your freshwater tank, please keep in mind that salt is not a protection against diseases. It can be used to treat certain fish diseases, but it should be used carefully.
Most commercially available snail treatments are safe for use with aquarium salt. Make sure that the treatment specifically states that it is safe for use with salt. If you have a snail infection, please remember that the use of aquarium salt can make your disease worse.
