Is it ok to exercise after acupuncture?

Writer John Campbell

It depends, but the truth is that I have not seen any research on this subject. however, I will offer some personal opinions on this matter. I think you can do whatever you want really. Doing light aerobic workouts is fine, but if you are lifting heavy weights, be careful of course, as you could possibly tear the tissues (muscles and tendons) that were just healed by acupuncture. I know what I am talking about cause I used to be a powerlifter.

I hope this helps and please remember: do not let anyone tell you otherwise. if you feel like doing something, then do it without hesitation.

Acupuncture is a means of healing the body by inserting needles into specific parts of the body. It has been shown to decrease inflammation, reduce pain and increase the range of motion in joints. When acupuncture is performed on an area, there is increased blood flow in that area which contributes to faster healing and allows for easier movement. If we look at using acupuncture in this manner, it makes sense that exercising would be ok after receiving acupuncture treatment.

But still, there are some things that you should consider before you start exercising after Acupuncture. For sure it is not a good idea to do rigorous activities (e.g lifting weights), and if you decide to exercise make sure you warm up properly and stretch it more than usual, especially the muscles that were treated with Acupuncture needles

It also depends on how long ago acupuncture was performed. If this was done several days ago then I don’t think there will be any additional risk of exercising. On the other hand, if your last treatment was just yesterday, I’d recommend resting today and starting light tomorrow with complementary treatments such as cupping or guasha 🙂

Finally, most acupuncturists would advise doing so anyways since most patients can feel reinvigorated after a session. Of course, it’s important to listen to your body and if you feel like doing anything then do it without hesitation.
