Is it okay to work out with a sinus infection?
John Campbell
Yes, you can work out with a sinus infection. But if your symptoms are severe enough, you should probably hold off on the cardio until you feel better. Treatment for sinusitis includes rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications. If your symptoms are mild-to-moderate, your doctor may recommend that you wait until they clear up on their own before participating in physical activities.

A bacterial infection of the sinuses is more unusual and a bacterial infection may cause a longer duration of symptoms. I would still try to avoid going to the gym till you feel better.
Often the pain is caused by the inflammation of the sinuses. If this is your case, then exercise can make it worse since you are causing more movement in your sinus structure and consequently more discomfort. The last thing you want to do if you have a sinus infection is damage or irritate any of the mucus membranes in your nose or sinuses. This will only cause more pain and discomfort for you, so just wait to work out till you feel better.
If you still choose to exercise while having a sinus infection, I recommend doing light aerobic exercises such as yoga, Pilates, stationary bike, etc. Nothing that can produce a lot of sweat as the air may irritate your sinuses even more.
In case the temperature is on top of your sinus infection, I would wait until it goes back to normal before working out. Always drink lots of fluids while exercising and if you feel dizzy or nauseous stop the workout immediately. If the symptoms persist, see a doctor.
The best thing to do if you are diagnosed with a sinus infection is to take the medication prescribed by your doctor and rest. The more you try to push through, the worse it gets.
