Is it safe to get breast implants in Mexico?

Writer Sarah Silva

Mexico offers a great medical tourism destination. It’s close, affordable, and has some of the best plastic surgeons on earth. Is getting breast implants in Mexico safe? There are certain precautions you should take before deciding on this course of action.

The first thing you should know is that not all plastic surgeons in Mexico are board-certified. What this usually means it’s they don’t have the same amount of education and training as surgeons in the United States, Canada, or Europe. In our case at the Elite Body Sculpture, all of our surgeons are board-certified and have at least 12 years of experience. Only the best work for us!

There is a high risk of infection with all breast implant surgeries because they involve breaking the skin barrier. Breast implants in Mexico and most places outside the United States, Canada, and Europe use more silicone and a higher volume of fill (saline versus silicone). This means that they are more prone to rupture because the walls of the implant are thinner. The best advice is prevention. Make sure your Mexican surgeon uses high-quality implants that have been proven in studies. Look for globally approved brands like Mentor or Allergan.

Make sure that your surgeon uses double-layer sutures or surgical staples to close the incision site. Sutures are more effective in minimizing scarring than staples. They allow healing with equal tension on all sides, which results in the very little scaring and better contour of the breast. The best thing is that they completely dissolve in 6-12 months.

What else can you do to guarantee the health of your breasts after breast augmentation surgery in Mexico? Be sure to take all necessary precautions against infection, like receiving vaccination prior to traveling. You should pack an antibiotic (Amoxicillin or Augmentin), ibuprofen, and an anti-nausea pill (Dramamine). All of this will be available to you at the hospital where you’ll receive your breast implants.

Another thing to think about is anesthesia. While local anesthesia only numbs the immediate area, regional anesthesia can numb not only the chest but parts of your body near it. For example, you may receive liposculpture (fat reduction) at the same time, which can be quite painful.
