Is Laminate Flooring Underlay Necessary?

Writer Andrew Davis

Laminate flooring requires underlayment. You must ensure that your subfloor is level before installing laminate. Floors can float because of underlayment, which also acts as a sound dampener and stabilizes and supports the locking systems between planks.

What happens if you don’t use underlayment under laminate flooring?

Even if your home or property’s subfloor is uneven, if your laminate floor does not have an underlayment to support it, it may move and shift over time. Wear-and-tear and even warping of the floor could occur as a result. It’s less likely that you’ll have to pay for costly repairs if you have more stability.

Can you lay laminate flooring without underlay?

Installing laminate flooring without underlayment is an option if you’re working in a low-traffic area like a mudroom or laundry room and need a quick and low-cost solution. There must be no nails, screws, bumps, or dips in the subfloor.

What flooring does not require underlayment?

Every other application, such as covering existing hardwood floors, vinyl flooring that isn’t cushioned, and concrete, requires the use of one. It’s also possible that you don’t need a vapor barrier if your vinyl plank flooring already has an underlayment installed.

Can I use carpet underlay for laminate flooring?

Under no circumstances should you use carpet underlayment to protect your laminate floor from damage. This is not the way to save money on a new floor, no matter how desperate you are to do so. The long-term consequences of installing laminate flooring over carpet underlayment outweigh the short-term benefits.
