What causes a burnt valve?

Writer Andrew Davis

Burned valves occur when the material of the valve has been damaged by high temperatures and the valve can no longer seal properly. Allowing the vehicle to overheat or using incorrect fuel are two common causes of burnt valves.

What are the signs and symptoms of a corroded valve?

Low power and a tendency to misfire
There is air leaking from the exhaust system or the throttle body.
Remove the cylinder head from the engine.
The timing chain is broken.
Valve noise, rough idle, popping noise, and poor gas mileage.

What’s the best way to fix a blown valve?

A machine shop might be able to replace the valve and recondition the cylinder head for you in some cases. The cylinder head may also need to be replaced in some cases.

What could cause a valve to break down?

Valve bending or breaking as a result of contact with the pistons is the most common failure mode. Because of timing chain/belt breakage and incorrect installation of new belts and chains, the valves are contacting the top of the piston.

Can a burnt valve be caused by an exhaust leak?

Burnt valves are most commonly caused by a valve that does not seal properly. The idea behind an exhaust leak causing a burnt valve is that the exhaust system’s back pressure is reduced, allowing unburned fuel to pass through the valve (evacuating the cylinder prior to complete burn).

Is it possible to repair a burnt valve with seafoam?

The same performance issues can be caused by a burned exhaust valve as described above. Using Sea Foam Spray in the intake and Sea Foam Motor Treatment in the fuel and crankcase will help keep your valves carbon-free and operating as they should for many miles.

Is a compression test going to reveal a burnt valve?

When exhaust valves are burned, they usually result in compression losses. A compression test or a leak-down test is a good way to check for a burned exhaust valve.

Is it possible to lap a burnt valve?

A valve that has been severely burned must be replaced. Lapping is the cheapest, least effective, and simplest method of repairing burnt valves.
