What Do American Toads Eat?

Writer David Wilson

Learn What American Toads Eat

Adult American toads are carnivorous in nature. American toads will eat insects, worms, spiders, and slugs. Tadpoles are herbivores that eat aquatic plants. A variety of birds, including hawks and herons and snakes, including garter and hognose snakes, rely on adult snakes for food. Tadpoles are eaten by aquatic invertebrates like diving beetles. Snakes, particularly garter and hognose snakes, are their main predators as adults.

The bulk of Minnesota is home to the American toad. They can be found in a range of habitats, including woods, grasslands, and several types of wetlands. Like all frogs and toads, this species lays its eggs in freshwater marshes. The eggs are arranged in two helical rows and can be anywhere from 20 to 66 feet long. Females lay 4,000 to 20,000 eggs each year, which hatch in two to eight days. Depending on the water temperature, these eggs develop into tadpoles in 30-60 days. Eggs hatch and change more quickly in warmer water. Tadpoles gather in shallow areas of ponds and streams until they turn into toadlets in late July. Toadlets are said to be less than 0.5 inches (1 cm) long when they metamorphose.

Insects and Animals

Adult American toads are omnivorous. American toads will eat snails, beetles, slugs, earthworms, and various other insects. Unlike most toads, which wait for prey to approach before pouncing, American toads can capture prey by shooting out their sticky tongues. In addition, they may eat larger prey using their front legs. Additionally, American toads can eat ants, other toads, slugs, Cicadas, rollie pollies, Mealworms, Worms, Fruit, Crickets, and small frogs.

Fruits and Vegetables

Toads are omnivores, preferring to consume live prey or meat. They do not consume prey that has been slain or dead meat. They will generally consume everything that fits in their mouths. It is safe for children to eat fruits and vegetables on occasion, but they may not enjoy it.
