What Do Ants Do With The Food They Collect?

Writer Emily Cortez

What do ants eat when they’re not building a nest? In order to eat something, an ant uses its powerful mandibles to break it down into smaller pieces. Many times, ants come across larger-than-usual food sources. In order for the colony to get its fill, worker ants will carry food back to their nests.

What do the ants do with the food item?

Workers ants are summoned from the nest to gather the food when it is discovered. Their social stomach is filled with water, which they can then distribute to other ants in their nest. Additionally, the workers return to the nest with solid foods for the larvae to consume.

Why do the ants collect food?

Foragers (the ants who collect food) move deeper into the nest in order to distribute food to more members of the colony. It is common for ants that care for the young to live deep within the nest. When food is scarce, they move to the nest’s periphery so that foragers can get to them faster.

Where do ants go after taking food?

Liquids and semi-solids found outside are the preferred food sources for ants. After that, they’ll use their social stomach to transport and distribute the food to the rest of the colonies. It’s like ants have a “internal lunchbox” in this social stomach.

Where do the ants store what they collect?

The upper part of the digestive system is where workers collect fluids while foraging (the crop). They regurgitate some of this fluid and pass it on to the rest of the workers upon their return.

Do ants poop?

The answer is yes. Digestive waste is expelled from their bodies via an excretory system.

Do ants feel pain?

A phenomenon known as “nociception” was discovered 15 years ago in insects, specifically fruit flies. They react in the same way that humans do to pain when they are exposed to extreme heat, cold, or other harmful stimuli.
