What Do Asian Lady Beetles Eat?

Writer Andrew Davis

Asian lady beetles are the multicolored, large coccinellid and most variable species of beetles. These are invasive species. As the name indicates they are native to the Asian region. They look very similar but are definitely different from the native ladybugs. They have a chewing mouthpart called pincers that helps them to capture and bite their prey. They can bite or pinch when irritated but their bite does not cause serious injury or do not spread any kind of disease.

The life stages of Asian lady beetles go like, from egg to larva, then pupa, and lastly as an adult. They lay eggs in early spring on host plants and eggs are hatched in 3 to 5 days. CimeXa insecticide dust is used to combat these Asian lady beetles. If crushed, they produce a bad foul odor and leave a dark stain on the surface. They like to hibernate during the winter season.

They are mostly found in agricultural crops, gardens, and landscapes. Adults have oval or convex bodies and are about ¼ inches in length. They have tan to orange-reddish color and black spots on wing covers. They have hidden wings. Spots serve as a warning. Lady beetles are not ladybugs.

Insects

Asian Lady Beetles eat insects like aphids, spiders, mites, mealy bugs, small ants and ticks, etc.

Plants

Asian Lady Beetles also eat leaves and plant parts. They are always found in agricultural lands; they eat small leaves and small plants sometimes indirectly by eating plant-eating insects. Asian Lady Beetles also eat fruits but only open fruits, they have holes done by other birds or insects and like to feed on fully ripened fruits.

What Asian Lady Beetles don’t like to eat?

Asian Lady Beetles don’t eat wood, fabric, or any kind of clothes. Due to their smaller size, they can only forage on small insects not bigger insects.
