What Do Baby Hedgehogs Look Like?
David Wilson
The hedgehog babies are called hoglets and are born in June and July. Almost 4 or 5 hoglets are born in a litter. They belong to the phylum Chordata (subfamily: Erinaceinae). They were named hedgehogs because they nest in the hedges and have pig-like snouts.

What Baby Hedgehogs Look Like?
Baby hedgehogs are born blind and have no visible spines. Newborn hoglets weigh only 25 grams (one ounce) and are very tiny. Their quills are covered with a protective membrane that shrinks with time. When this membrane falls, the quills show up. The baby hedgehogs possess a layer of liquid (like a water blister) covered in greyish skin.
After few hours of birth, the greyish skin of baby hedgehogs withdraws and reveals almost 100 white spines. Baby hedgehogs are pale pink colored and have closed eyes at birth. Newly born have no teeth, wrinkly ears, and facial features. Moreover, their facial features are not well defined. Just like a human, baby hedgehogs have milk teeth.
After a few weeks of birth, they grow fur, and brown spines appear, darkening the skin. The baby hedgehog (15-18 days old) starts to open their eyes and explore the surroundings. After opening their eyes, they also start to grow their teeth. Four weeks old hedgehogs look like miniature hedgehogs and are ready to live independently by leaving the nest. Six weeks old baby hedgehog weighs almost 12 oz (300grams). Baby hedgehogs are not sexually mature (in the first year of age) and don’t mate until they hibernate.
