What Do Baby Maggots Look Like?

Writer David Wilson

Baby Maggots are the larval stage of a fly. They are like baby flies. Baby maggots which usually exist in homes are the larval stage of bluebottle fly or housefly. They eat rotting or living materials that depend on their kind.

When they get food from any material, they leave chewed holes in that material. Rotting garbage is a common source of food for maggots, including leftover human food and plant matter. In rare cases, you can also find them on an untreated wound of the animal.

By appearance, baby maggots are of white or creamy color. However, sometimes they can be of yellow or greyish shade. The color of the baby maggot depends upon the species of fly which gave birth to it. If we talk about their shape, baby maggots look like a tube without any legs. You can see one blunt end, which is the mouth part of the baby maggot. On the other end, their body contains a darker sharp point. The size of the baby maggot can range from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch longer. But mostly, baby maggots come in the size of 1/4 inch in length. Due to their small size and white color, it is difficult to find them on the surface.

You are not supposed to touch them, but they have a good texture. Baby maggots have a softer texture with no firm or hard exoskeleton in their body. They don’t even have separate body parts or any hard exterior.

As flies give priority to damp and darker areas to lay their eggs. So, baby maggots only exist in darker and damper places where they are not visible to anyone. You can find them under a rock or a garbage pail.
