Writer Ethan Hayes

Mosquitoes are small flies. They are from the family of insects named Culicidae. More than 3600 species of mosquitoes have been found today. They have a life cycle that consists of four parts- egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The mosquito in its larval and pupa stage is called a baby mosquito.

We usually see adult mosquitoes, but not everyone knows about baby mosquitoes. They can develop right under your nose in your yard in stagnant water with tiny debris for their feeding. They eat algae, fungi, plankton, and other microorganisms in water. In this article, we will discuss what type of bodies and appearance do they have.

What Baby Mosquitoes Look Like?

Baby mosquitoes also called the larval and pupa stage of mosquitoes, are tiny insects that live and develop in water. They are also called ‘mosquito wigglers. The shape of baby mosquitoes is much different from adult mosquitoes. They have a size of about ¼ inch in length.

In the larval stage, they have a shape that resembles a small hairy worm. They have a hard and round head with a soft body. They have well-developed mouths having fan-like brushes, which they use for filtering food while feeding. Their body is also a large thorax with no legs. Moreover, they have an abdomen with ten segments and a siphon located at the tip of its core.

Pupa stage mosquitoes are also considered baby mosquitoes. When larval baby mosquitoes molt a fourth time, they become pupa baby mosquitoes. They have a body whose look is like a comma. Their head and thorax fuse together, which is also known as cephalothorax. Their abdomen becomes curved. They can also dive and swim in tumbling patterns. Moreover, pupa baby mosquitoes don’t eat and therefore are less active.
