What Do Baby Pandas Eat?

Baby pandas are said to be omnivorous because they eat both plants and small animals for their survival. Their diet contains a large portion of plants but they also eat rodents and small creatures. Large pandas are said to be herbivorous.

Baby pandas are found mostly in the mountains of Southwest China, where they live along with their parents and these mountains are their natural habitat.

The average weight of a newly born baby panda is about 100 grams and they can be smaller than a mouse. If we compared this size to their mothers, they are only 1/900 of their mother’s weight.

Meat and small animals

Baby pandas eat mostly bamboo and it contains 99% of their diet portion but sometimes they also eat meat and small animals. Baby pandas can eat fish, rodents such as mice, and carrions. 

Baby pandas eat almost every day. In daylight, they go hunting and in search of their food for 2-4 hours. Baby pandas eat bamboo for about six months by their mothers and they search for their food when they are fully weaned at nine months.

Plants and fruits

In the wild, baby pandas start eating bamboo. Baby pandas eat bamboo roots, shoots, and leaves. Along with bamboo they also eat some fruits and plants. A newborn baby panda eats bamboo which its mother feeds to the panda. 

Sometimes Baby pandas eat fruits like apples, bananas, peaches, and plums. Baby pandas also eat pumpkins, kidney beans, pig food, and wheat. Additionally, Baby pandas will eat vegetables like cucumbers, lettuce, and other leafy green vegetables. Baby pandas love to eat apples and steamed cornbread. Baby pandas also eat grass, green corn, flowers, and honey.

What baby pandas don’t eat

Baby pandas don’t eat their poop while the large pandas eat. Baby pandas don’t eat insects.
