What Do Baby Snakes Look Like?

Writer John Campbell

The most noticeable distinction is the difference in size. Coloration, scales, and head shape vary from species to species. However, when comparing adults to infants, the majority of characteristics remain the same. Read on to learn about the physical appearance of baby snakes.

What Baby Snakes Look Like?

Baby Snakes are limbless reptiles with elongated cylindrical bodies, scaly skin, lidless eyes, and a forked tongue. Generally, baby snakes are light tan or somewhat pink in color, with a brilliant yellow tip to their tail which gradually fades into a color that is more similar to the color of the rest of the body.

The body of the baby snake is covered in a dark blotch pattern that runs horizontally. Each shape is wider on the sides of the baby snake than it is on the top, forming an hourglass pattern. They also have two small, dark dots on the top of their heads, though some individuals may be devoid of the spots altogether. The head of a newborn snake looks wedge-shaped, and it may also appear a little heart-shaped.

Some baby snakes can have narrower or rounder heads; the form of the snake’s head can be an excellent indicator. Aside from the dots, there is no pattern on the heads of the baby snakes. During their first few weeks, they might be as little as 5–10 cm in length. The length of a baby snake may reach between 2-3 feet or several feet when it reaches adulthood.
