Bird mites are said to be more closely related to spiders than mites. They are microscopic and like to live in the warm areas of the bird’s body, such as the face, neck, armpits, and other parts where hair is short. In this article, we are going to discuss what do they look like.

What Bird Mites Look Like?

Bird mites are quite little, with adults growing to reach only about a 1/32 of an inch (quite less than 1 mm long) in length. That is about the same size as the full stop at the end of this phrase, to give you an idea. They have a flattened oval body that is covered with small hairs. The mature adult’s bird mites have eight legs, while at the earlier stage, they have only six legs.

Bird mites have a razor-sharp mouthpiece that they use to pierce their hosts’ skin to feed on the host’s blood. They have different colors according to their meal, when they are fed and how long they feed.

When mites have not eaten, they are white, almost translucent in color, and once they have eaten, they are a vibrant red. Afterwards, once they digest their meal, their color will become darkened to black and brown or greyish hue.

Bird mites generally appear black with a few white dots on them. They resemble a small piece of black pepper that is unable to remain steady for a long time.
