What Do Blue Iguanas Eat?

Blue iguanas are known as herbivorous species because they feed on plants such as leaves, fruits, and flowers. Blue iguanas are famous pet lizards. Blue iguanas also eat insects, crabs, and some other animals, but they rarely eat animals and insects. Blue iguanas mostly prefer a plant diet.

Blue iguanas are found only on the Grand Cayman Islands. Blue iguanas prefer to live in rocky forests and in dry coastal areas. Blue iguanas are also found in semi-deciduous forests, scrub woodlands, the areas which contain cactus and thorny plants, and in moist forests. 

The average size of a blue iguana is about 5 feet and some iguanas can exceed it. The average weight of a blue iguana is about 25 pounds. Blue iguanas can live for 25-40 years.

Fruits and plants

Blue iguanas love to eat the leaves and stems of plants. They also feed on flowers and fruits. Blue iguanas eat leafy green vegetables like lettuce, parsley, kale, cabbage, and watercress. Blue iguanas can eat alfalfa hay, bok choy, Swiss chard, dandelion and kohlrabi. Blue iguanas also eat vegetables that are rich in oxalic acid like beetroot, rhubarb, spinach, celery, and leeks.

Fruits make up 10-20% of a blue iguana diet. A blue iguana can eat fruits that contain oxalic acids like figs, berries, and kiwi. Blue iguanas can eat fruits like melon, mangoes, bananas, guava, and peaches. Blue iguanas will eat apricots and dates. 

Insects and bugs

Blue iguanas eat small insects and bugs occasionally when vegetables or fruits are not enough. Blue iguanas can eat insects like crickets, tofu, mealworms, and pinky mice. Blue iguanas can eat crabs and slugs.

In captivity, blue iguanas can eat hard-boiled eggs because they contain large portions of protein. Also, Blue iguanas do eat carrots, herbivorous lizard pellets, and sweet potatoes.

Blue iguanas don’t eat at night; they sleep during night time and remain active during day time.
