What Do Blue Ringed Octopus Eat?

Blue ringed octopus belongs to the genus Hepalochlaena. It is a carnivore species. It is one of the highly poisonous and venomous species of the octopus. It is found in tide pools and coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is native to the waters of Southern Australia and the Sea of Japan.

Blue ringed octopus usually live inside a beautiful coral reef. It produces a potent neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin, which is potentially a very strong and harmful substance found in pufferfish and is produced by a symbiotic bacteria present in the salivary glands of the animal. It is more toxic than any of the venoms in the world. 

The biggest predator of this species is the moray eel. Other predators may include killer whales and seals. The average lifespan of a blue ringed octopus is about 2 years. In size, a blue ringed octopus is 4 to 6 centimeters long and its arms can reach up to the length of 10 centimeters. 

The average weight of a blue ringed octopus is around 28 grams. Their dorsal surface is kind of rough and is covered with a lot of wrinkled appearances. Cephalopods have color-changing chromatophores on their skin so they can camouflage whenever they want but blue ringed octopus have a different trick with their tentacles they are not covered by chromatophores. They mostly hunt during the daytime.

Blue ringed octopus eats small crabs like hermit crabs, shrimps, small snails, small fishes like minnows, shiners, cubs, crayfish, hermit shrimp, lobsters, sea birds, goldfish, clams, little octopus, eels, slugs, and many little aquatic animals.

What Blue ringed octopus do not eat?

As they are carnivore species, Blue ringed octopuses eat flesh and insects inside the water. They do not forage on plants and Vegetables or any cereals or dairy products.
