Bowfin is a fish scientifically known as Amia calva. It is a bony fish and belongs to chordates. Its common names are mudfish, mud pike, griddle, dogfish, Grinnell, Choupique, and swamp trout. They are capable of breathing both in water and in the air hence are known as bimodal breathers like gars. The typical size of a bowfin is 7 to 9 inches in its first year but its length increases up to 20 inches in 4 to 5 years of age, according to a world record bowfin reached a size of 34.3 inches in North America weighs 21 pounds.

Bowfin also eats insects and nightcrawlers, especially cockroaches, locusts, spiders, mites, ticks, worms like mealworms, wax worms, earthworms, eels, sea birds, etc.
What bowfins don’t eat?
They are predators; Bowfin only likes to prey on animals, insects, and worms. Bowfin doesn’t eat plants, vegetables, and fruits. Bowfin doesn’t like to eat dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese, etc.
