What Do Brook Trout Eat?

Brook Trout is a freshwater species of fish and belongs to the family Salmonidae. It is native to the North Eastern US and Canada but it is found all over Europe, Island, Asia, and North America. An adult brook trout weighs around 4 to 5 kg. According to a world record, a brook trout weighed around 14 pounds. The average lifespan of a brook trout is about 3 years. In large streams and better habitats, they can live up to 5 to 6 years. They mature after 2 years.

The average size length of a brook trout is around 24.5 cm and the maximum length recorded is 86 cm. After 44 days of fertilization then the eggs hatch in 50- degree temperature of the water. Natural reproduction occurs in small streams. They have long, streamlined bodies, and huge mouths. They come in a variety of colors from olive to blue-grey and black but have a silver belly. 

They have pale yellow worm-like markings all over the body surface called vermiculations along the dorsal side. They are endangered from water snakes, kingfishers, snapping turtles, and herons. They are found in clear water, cool and oxygenated creeks, small to medium rivers, and lakes. They are used to living in cold water therefore they can’t survive in warm water for long.

Fishes, other aquatic animals, and Insects

Brook trout eat small fishes, bluegill, smelt, perch, crustaceans, mollusks, amphibians, small mammals, insects, leeches, minnows especially in winters, tadpoles, and worms like mealworms, earthworms, etc.

Plankton

Young brook trout’s also like to forage on plankton. Brook trout will eat small plants, especially water plants, algae, water lilies, etc.

What Brook Trout’s don’t eat?

Brook trout do not eat snakes, whales, or sharks as they are endangered by these creatures. Brook trout can’t feed on dairy products like milk and yogurt.
