What do carpet beetles eat?

Carpet beetles eat plants, roots, nectar, stems and seeds, and animal material like fur, feathers, hairs, skin, and dead insects. Carpet beetles love to eat wool carpets, blankets, and fabrics.

Besides wool carpets and blankets, carpet beetles enjoy consuming silk, feathers, skin, felt, fur, and leather items. Such items contain fibrous animal protein that is easy to digest for carpet beetles.

These carpet beetles enjoy eating wickers due to their woven design. Moreover, carpet beetles love to eat human food like flour, rice, sugar, jute, and cereal stored in your kitchen.

Also, carpet beetles like to eat cat food or dog food from your pets. Carpet beetles will even eat and damage your fruit, Flowers, and vegetables stored in your fridge. Also, carpet beetles can also eat insulation, cork, and your pet’s hairs.

Do carpet beetles eat household items?

Carpet beetles can easily eat household items made of wool, skin, feathers, fur-like coats, comforters, bed sheets, curtains, cashmere, mattresses, and carpets.

However, carpet beetles don’t eat wood, but their larvae can feed and damage your wood furniture, wood floors, laminating flooring, cardboard, drywall, and wallpaper if you leave them unchecked.

Moreover, they don’t leave your closet of choice and tend to eat your silk and animal stuffed clothes, damage your shoes and denim jeans. Additionally, carpet beetles can eat towels, toilet paper, and underlays, as well as books and papers. Carpet beetles will chew your plastic bags and other plastic materials.

More often, they tend to consume rubber, memory foam, and other microfibers too.

They also eat holes in yarn that are probably a mixture of wool and synthetic fibers. Even you can’t escape from carpet beetles as they tend to eat your hairs too.

Furthermore, carpet beetles also feed on ants, spiders, and sometimes bed bugs.

What do carpet beetles not eat?

Boric acid is an insecticide, so it can be fatal for carpet beetles. Carpet beetles usually don’t eat synthetic fibers like cotton, rayon, acrylic, nylon, viscose, polypropylene, and polyesters, while cotton and linen can usually be damaged. So, they don’t attack nylon and synthetic fiber carpets.

Moreover, they hate the vinegar smell, so they don’t like to eat it.
