What Do Carpet Bugs Look Like?

Writer Robert King

Carpet bugs are beetles that most often infest carpets. This pest can get food from silk, leather, wool, feathers, and fur items. These materials contain an animal protein known as keratin.

Carpet bugs remain undetected unless they harm items in large quantities. They often appear during the spring season, which provides clues about the probable infestation of carpet bugs in the home. Female bugs usually lay their eggs in large quantities near vulnerable materials.

What Carpet Bugs Look Like?

Carpet bugs have oval-shaped bodies which come in different colors. The color of the carpet bug can range from white, yellow, and black. They also come with distinct mottled patterns of all these colors. However, in some species of carpet bugs, you may also find orange color.

Just like clothes moths, their favorite place is a wool rug stored inside a closet. Adult carpet bugs prefer flower pollen instead of woolen materials. The size of some common species of carpet bugs may range from 1mm to 4 mm longer. They attack blankets, pillows, coats, scarves, comforters, and many such things in homes.

In general appearance, carpet bugs resemble ladybugs. Their primary shape can be like a carrot, but they transform into an oval shape with the passage of time. The texture of the skin of carpet bugs can be a bit hairy but a smooth one. Their larvae generally have more hairs; that’s why they are called woolly bears. Carpet beetles cannot bite a human being as their mouth can only eat woolen and fabric materials. Carpet bugs have operative wings in their body structure which helps them to fly to their desired location. Moreover, they have pair of antennas and a total of six legs in their body structure.
