Learn What Catbirds Eat

Many random songbirds are categorized as catbirds due to their wailing calls just like the meowing sound of a cat. They communicate by visual sounds, usually male perches to make their presence noted and female sings after male catbirds. They mostly live in dense shrubs and vines and thicker trees. They do not like any human or other disturbances in their habitat. Catbirds are Omnivores in nature. Studies have concluded roughly about 60% is the survival rate of catbirds annually. The longest lifespan once recorded for a catbird is 17 years and 11 months. Catbirds are generally friendly, but mostly they cannot be domesticated because, as mentioned before, they do not want any disturbance in their habitat. Among all catbirds, grey catbirds are of all the hype.

Grey catbirds cannot be easily targeted by nest parasites. They can instinctively recognize their imposter eggs by easily remembering the look of their first egg, and they never forget and misplace their eggs.

Plants and Fruits

Catbirds eat berries, Cherries, Raisins, apples, bananas, grapes and grape jelly, and citrus fruits. Catbirds prefer the food that attracts them. Catbirds can eat flowers, however, they are rarely seen eating flowers. On the other hand, catbirds like to eat seeds,  sunflower seeds, and safflower seeds. However, catbirds don’t like to eat peanuts. They do eat most of the fruits. Catbirds will eat strawberries, tomatoes, and peaches. Catbirds are not garden friendly but are definitely attracted towards gardens with tomatoes planted because they are fond of tomatoes.

Insects, Eggs, and Flesh

Catbirds are insect eaters. They almost feed on all types of insects. Catbirds eat ticks, ants, wasps, worms, mealworms, slugs, beetles, Japanese beetles, caterpillars, monarch caterpillars, etc. Catbirds don’t eat mosquitoes or honey bees.

Also, catbirds have an egg-destroying behavior often to consume contents from the eggs.  Catbirds will eat eggs, other bird eggs, and suet. Catbirds aren’t known to eat baby birds. In the winter, catbirds eat fruits like berries and strawberries; they mainly eat fruits in the winter.
