North American hawks comprise three different species called Chicken Hawks. These chicken hawks include the cooper’s hawk, the sharp-shinned hawks, or the red-tailed hawks. Amongst all red-tailed hawks are the biggest. They are skinned with feathers of blue-grey, brown-grey or tawny color.
The term itself is misleading as chickens do not offer a major portion of the meal for the chicken-hawks. Interestingly these three species of hawks are hardly seen preying on chickens. The young ones of these fierce predators are known to be hunted by crows and owls.
Open grasslands, woodlands, forests, and deserts are natural habitats of these three species of chicken hawks.
Being solitary nature-wise, they never fly in groups, except the time of year when male and female chicken hawks are mating.
Chicken hawks are as territorial and aggressive as any other hawk. These chicken hawks are not recommended as pets as they belong to a wild environment.
Chicken hawks opportunistically attack pets. Chicken Hawks eat rats, squirrels and other rodents. Also, Chicken Hawks will eat Rabbits, snakes, lizards, bats, frogs, and fishes, which they can easily attack and eat.
Red-tailed hawks feed on pet dogs especially miniatures breed. Dogs that weigh less than the hawk’s own weight are more at the dangerous edge.
The most deadly predators of ducks are often supposed chicken hawks. Although they are unable to uplift ducks of higher weight. The chicken hawks knock down ducks from their back and grab them for a meal.
Cats in your backyard can also fall easy prey to chicken hawks.
The primary hunt of chicken hawks revolves around other small birds of favorite backyard species.
Mammals are a basic feed or significant portion of the diet of chicken hawks.
