They live in chicken cracks and hide in crevices, and spend most of their there. Usually, they come out to feed at night, but they rarely come out during the day. For birds, they can cause severe problems like irritation, blood loss, and disruption of sleep. This article will discuss what their bodies are made of and what type of appearance they possess.

What Chicken Mites Look Like?

Chicken mites are tiny insects that can be found on bird’s skin. Their size ranges from 0.75 mm to 1.5mm. They have an oval-shaped body that is flattened from top to bottom. Though they resemble in shape to northern fowl mites through size, they can be differentiated. The adult Chicken mite has a size of 1.5mm, whereas the fowl has a length of 0.5mm. Moreover, they have a back full of hair.

They possess the white or grey color when they are unfed, but after feeding, they are full of blood, so their color turns from white or grey to red. They appear in different forms according to their lifetime. Their life cycle has four parts; Larvae, Protonymph, Deutonymph, and Adult.

Larvae have six legs, and they do not feed, and the others have eight legs. The females of Protonymph, Deutonymph, and adults regularly feed on the blood of their host, whereas males feed occasionally

They can be found on the skin of birds in the form of a clump. Their clumps can be easily found around the base of feathers, around the vent, and under the wings.
