Chuckwallas are herbivorous lizards because they graze on a variety of plants. They feed on leaves, shoots, fruits, and flowers of different plants. Chuckwallas are attracted to bright color plants. Sometimes chuckwallas feed on insects too. Chuckwalla is not a venomous lizard and not dangerous to humans.

Chuckwallas are large lizards and they are found in northern Mexico and in arid regions of the South Western United States. They are also found in southeastern California, western Arizona, eastern Baja California, and Southern Nevada. Chuckwallas prefer to live in habitats that are arid, possess boulder-strewn slopes, desert conditions, lava flows, and in dry arroyos.

The average size of a chuckwalla is about 50cm in length, but some can grow much larger. The average weight of a chuckwalla is about 2 pounds. Chuckwallas can live for about 25 years or more.

Insects and bugs

Chuckwallas mostly feed on plants, but occasionally they eat insects and bugs. They eat bugs that are present in the fruits and vegetables. They also eat insects such as ants, crickets, mealworms, and beetles. These insects and bugs give them a large dose of calcium and vitamins. 

Chuckwallas eat daily once for about an hour to raise their body temperature up to 80s to 90s Fahrenheit. 

Plants and vegetables

Chuckwalla’s diet consists of a large portion of plants and vegetable components. Chuckwallas can eat plants like cactus and sagebrush. Chuckwallas love to eat leaves and fruits of browneyes, creosote bushes, and desert ragweed.

As chuckwallas eat green vegetables all day, Chuckwallas love to eat fruits such as apples, bananas, cantaloupe, berries, mangoes, and papaya. Also, Chuckwallas eat flowers like dandelions and nasturtium.

Chuckwallas mainly eat Brussel, green beans, lettuce, and Brussel sprouts, rice, sweetcorn, and carrots. 

In captivity, Chuckwallas eat green vegetables, flowers, and fruits. They fulfill their water requirements from the plants they eat.

What chuckwallas don’t eat

Chuckwallas don’t eat scorpions, spinach, tomato, buttercup, cabbage, and citric fruits.
