What Cicadas Look Like?
Cicadas are multicolored insects having the longest life span of up to 17 years. Cicadas males are brownish, 12 mm in length, and females are darker, having 14 mm in size. Periodic cicadas are giant and easily identifiable. The same as other insects, they have three body parts; head, thorax, and abdomen. Their head has two large eyes, a nose-like thing, two antennas with one to three basal segments that direct them in flight, ears covered with membrane, and a beak with two stylets to pierce the branch and suck sap.
Their ears are known to be the most oversized ears among insects. They have ten spiracles for breathing, two on the thorax and eight on the abdomen. Their abdomen has reproductive, hearing, and sound-producing organs. There are four translucent wings to help them in flying. The front pair of wings act as a roof while they rest. They have three pairs of legs, among which the front pair is bit large and swollen.
Differentiation between different species of Cicadas is done by hearing the sound they produce. Their males have high pitch sounds of three different responses. There are two membranes in their abdomen that vibrate and produce sound up to 100Db of intensity. Cicadas female lays eggs in rice shapes, and their babies (Nymphs) live under the ground till adulthood.
