What Do Cockroaches Sound Like?
Robert King
Cockroaches such as the German, American, Brown-banded, and Oriental Cockroaches do not make any sounds at all when they are in their natural habitat. They do, however, produce a hissing, chirping, or clicking sound when subjected to severe temperatures or pressures.

Depending on how many of them are in your house, you might be able to hear a chirp or two coming from under the kitchen sink or behind the refrigerator, but you won’t generally be able to hear anything from them otherwise. The sounds emerging from your nightstand may keep you awake in the midst of the night. When species such as American cockroaches, which are common in residential areas, are agitated, they can make a hissing or a clicking sound, which is audible to humans.
In order to communicate with one another, cockroaches are believed to make a clicking sound when startled. There is no way you will be able to hear any noise coming from the roaches that are usually seen in houses unless your home is severely infested with them.
There are a lot of reasons why cockroaches make a clicking sound, the most prevalent of which being mating and fighting. During times of peril (especially from members of their own species), or while attempting to mate with another, they will produce the click or chirping sound to signal their presence.
Madagascar produces a hissing sound. As the name implies, the hissing cockroach emits hisses when disturbed.
Fortunately, the vast majority of these cockroaches do not exist in the natural environment (99 percent). Originally from the jungles of the island of Madagascar, they can now be found in vast numbers in the regions of the world where they were first discovered.
