What Do Dead Fleas Look Like?

Writer Emily Cortez

Fleas are blood-sucking entities that are known to be the most significant carrier of various infections. They are serious pests harming the organisms. The survival of fleas relies upon drawing out the blood from other living organisms and living on the body’s outer portion and are known as ectoparasites.

They are from the Siphonaptera order comprising of around 2500 hundred species. They are ectoparasites and can jump 50 times longer than their body length. Their larva feeds on tiny organic pieces as they have small mouths for chewing.

What Dead Fleas Look Like?

Dead fleas are tiny insects that don’t have wings and live on animals and humans’ bodies. Their body is divided into three portions: head, thorax, and abdomen. Their head has eyes, antenna, stylet, and comb. The head has three pairs of legs pointing backward. The core has ten segments, including genital organs. Their hard exoskeleton contains a cuticle made up of chitin.

They are dark-colored insects that are 1.5 to 3.3 millimeters long. They have stylet inserted into the host’s body to pierce the skin, after which blood is sucked through the epipharynx. They have long three pairs of legs with claws used for gripping the skin while sucking blood. The last pair of legs is best for jumping, allowing them to jump 17cm vertically and 33cm horizontally. They have a pad containing an elastic protein called resilin which helps them in jumping.

Some of the fleas don’t have good eyes; some of them have an eyespot with a biconvex lens. They possess a tight body for easy movement in hairs and have sclerites (rigid plates) on the body. There are spines on sclerites having backward direction, making it easier to move forward quickly. Sclerites are much harder to protect against scratching or any mechanical pressure. Typically fleas survive for two to three months, but they may live for a year in good conditions.
