Dogfish are found in the North Pacific Oceans and in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are also found in the northwest Atlantic and in Florida. Dogfish prefer to live in habitats such as in shallow coastal waters. They are mostly found in lakes, rivers, canals, dams, ponds, seas, and almost in every place where water is present.

The average size of a dogfish is about three to four feet in length. Their average weight is about eight pounds. A dogfish can live for 35 to 40 years.

Aquatic animals

Dogfish prey on a variety of aquatic animals. Dogfish can eat octopuses, squid, jellyfish, crabs, shrimps, and sea cucumbers. Dogfish can eat catfish and smaller sharks. Dogfish are basically sharks and they attack in clusters. Dogfish also eat capelin, mackerels, and herring. Dogfish eat small fishes such as small codfish, haddock fish, hake, and ratfish. Dogfish also eat shrimps, bivalves, and lobsters.

Dogfish eat their prey by biting down on it with their sharp teeth and strong jaws. At night, dogfish remain active and they eat lobsters, crabs, and other dogfish. During the day they remain at the bottom, but at night they roam throughout the water column.

Dogfish migrate in winter towards the south because they can’t tolerate excess cold weather, and there they eat small fish, prawns, and small crustaceans.

What dogfish don’t eat

Dogfish don’t eat humans as they are harmless to humans. They don’t eat sea vegetation and grass. Dogfish don’t eat large sharks, dolphins, whales, seals, or orcas.
