What Do Fathead Minnows Eat?

Writer David Wilson

Fathead minnows are considered to be opportunist feeders because of their large size. Fathead minnows eat a wide variety of foods, including algae, protozoa (such as ameba), plant matter, insects (both adults and larvae), rotifers, and copepods, among other things.

Animals and Insects

Fathead minnows are fairly simple fish to keep in aquaria. They can be raised on nearly any diet, regardless of whether or not the food is moving around in the cage. A common prey item for fathead minnows is brine shrimp, which is relatively easy to come by in large quantities.

Fathead minnows will also eat fish food in either flake or pellet form; however, it is best not to sprinkle the food on top of the water because they prefer to eat the food as it sinks in the water or when it is near the bottom of the aquarium. Fathead minnows also eat mosquito larvae tadpoles and fry.

Plants and Fruits

Fatheads have a short lifespan, usually only a few years. Fathead minnows can be found all over North America, from Canada to northern Mexico, and are particularly common in the Pacific Northwest. Wetlands, slow streams, and ponds, and lakes are all good places to look for these creatures. Because they feed on the bottom, fathead minnows consume a wide variety of animals and plants that are mixed with mud. Fathead minnows like to eat zooplankton (zooplankton is a type of algae duckweed).

What Fathead minnows don’t eat?

Fathead minnows are opportunists and they will eat almost anything for their survival.

Conclusion

Minnows can survive and reproduce in a variety of environments, including clear streams and creeks, natural and man-made lakes, and even stagnant and brackish water. Because of its diverse diet and adaptability, the minnow has become a very common freshwater fish.
