Flatheads are predatory fish that prey on bass, bream, shad, crayfish, and other catfish. Flatheads are also known to prey on other catfish. The young are more reliant on aquatic insects and crayfish than the adults, which indicates that they are less developed. Large flatheads congregate in areas where there is a lot of food, such as near tailraces of dams, from time to time. During the night, they frequently feed on the surface or in shallow water, returning to their residence in a hole or brush pile during the day to rest and recuperate. They almost never consume dead or decaying matter.

Animals and Insects

Flathead catfish are predators that prey on other fish. It ambushes its prey by concealing itself and waiting for it to come out of hiding—the fish typically feed at night. Flatheads are opportunistic feeders, and they prey on a variety of other fishes such as gizzard shad, bullheads, and carp as adults. Young ones, on the other hand, feed primarily on insect larvae until they reach about three inches in length, at which point their diet expands to include other small fishes. Flatheads feed on a variety of small fishes, including clams, crayfish, insects, and a variety of shad, shiners, and sunfish, when they are young.

As a result, live fish can be used as bait for flatheads while you are fishing because they are unwilling to consume foul-smelling or old bait.

Despite the fact that flatheads are not exclusively nocturnal, they are more active at night and during the month of June. Thus, they are typically shallower and will feed at a variety of depths and speeds. Consequently, it may be inactive during the daytime in deep water or maybe hiding under the cover of nightfall. Flathead catfish also eat bass shrimp bullheads, channel catfish, chicken, liver, crawfish, worms, smallmouth bass, dead bait, largemouth bass, eels, goldfish, crayfish, and minnows.

Adults are typically solitary creatures, with each individual claiming a favorite spot under a tree or in a cove, preferably in deep water. During the night, they move into shallow areas to feed on insects. Males defend their nests and eggs with a lot of vigor. It is their job to fan the nest with their tails in order to keep the eggs clean and to provide them with oxygenated water. It is possible that females’ bodies will conserve resources by not releasing eggs if they have not been eating well.
