Freshwater snails are herbivorous, which means that they eat plants for survival, but some aquatic snails are omnivorous or predatory carnivores. They eat both plants and some aquatic animals for survival. They are found all over the world in various habitats, from ephemeral pools to lakes or large rivers.
5000 snails known species are found all over the world. Freshwater snails are also called the deadliest snails because they can cause some parasitic diseases. Freshwater snails mainly eat algae for their nutritional requirements. A freshwater snail is about 1-4 inches long in size.
Insects and animals
Freshwater snails live on algae and dead matter for vitamins and energy. Some carnivorous snails eat insects, worms for survival. They can eat algae present in the aquatic environment, dead or dying fish even they can eat their own babies.
Freshwater snails can also eat fish eggs for energy, shrimps, moss, and for food, they eat algae particles that remain on the shells of other snails, they don`t eat fellow snails.
In fish tanks, they eat algae, debris, detritus which are present there. In a wild environment, they rely upon decaying or dead plants, debris, small dead animals, fish food, and the surface of some plants.
Plants and vegetables
Freshwater snails are fond of eating dead plants that are present in aquatic environments, but some species of them are not very fond of eating plants. They can eat lettuce, carrots, and some other leafy green vegetables. Some species of water snails also eat hair algae and bananas.
What freshwater snails don’t eat
Freshwater snails don’t eat fish poop, java moss, dairy products because they may have lactose intolerance. Also, fresh water snails don’t eat grapes, pumpkins, melons, apples, pears, and acidic fruits.
