What Do Fungus Gnats Eat?
Rachel Davis
Due to the fact that adult fungus gnats are attracted to light, you may first notice these pests flying near windows inside your home. Fungus gnats, on the other hand, are relatively weak fliers when compared to more active species such houseflies (Musca domestica), and they don’t tend to move around much inside. Foliage, growing media, compost, and wet mulch piles are all common places for fungus gnats to congregate near potted plants and run across (or rest on) them.

Female gnats tend to lay tiny eggs in moist organic debris or potting soil, which are then eaten by the males. The 14-inch-long larvae have a shiny black head and an elongate, whitish-to-clear, legless body that is elongate and whitish to clear. Fungus gnats eat organic mulch, leaf mold, grass clippings, and compost as well as root hairs, algae, and fungi. It is possible for larvae to leave slime trails on the surface of media if the conditions are particularly moist and fungus gnats are in abundance. These slime trails can be mistaken for those left by small snails or slugs.
Plants and Fruits
Fungus gnats larvae eat fungi, and adult fungus gnats graze mostly on decomposing organic matter in the soil.
Fungus gnat larvae feed on the hairs on the roots of plants and on soil that is highly organic. Fungus gnats also eat leaves, plants, fungus, mold plant leaves, fruit aphids, roots seeds, food flowers, and thrips.
