Find Out What Gray Wolves Eat

Gray wolves, sometimes known as timber wolves, are carnivores native to Eurasia and North America with long bushy tails that are typically black-tipped. They have the appearance of a big German shepherd. They hunt prey on their own, in groups, take other predators’ prey, or scavenge carrion.

Prey is discovered by accident or by scent. A wolf may devour up to 9 kg of meat in a single meal. Wolves may consume up to 20% of their body weight after capturing and killing their prey. Wolves in the wild may not be able to eat every day and must gorge when they do.  Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Around

What wolves consume is determined by where they dwell and the types of food available. Wolves in certain regions can only survive by killing cattle and devouring livestock carcasses and human trash. In this article, we will discuss what gray wolves eat and what they do not eat.

Animals

Gray wolves are carnivores that often hunt on ungulates considerably larger than themselves. Gray wolves eat grizzly bears, elk, deer, or moose. Still, they may also sometimes consume smaller animals. Gray wolves will eat beavers, rabbits, or goats. Gray wolves eat eagles, eggs, camels, ducks, bears, bobcats, hawks, cowbirds, artic foxes, coyotes, sheep, bison, musk oxen, and reindeer.

They contribute to the health of prey populations by hunting weak, elderly, and ill animals. Wolves typically consume nearly the whole carcass, including some hair and bones. Gray wolves will eat foxes and mice. Lone wolves often pursue smaller creatures such as mice, frogs, rodents, foxes, and other small mammals. Wolves may also consume livestock and rubbish if they are accessible. In the wild, gray wolves eat deer, moose, bison, elk, and more. In the winter, gray wolves like to eat deer, birds, and fish.

What Gray Wolves Don’t Eat

Even though they are carnivores, meaning they enjoy eating flesh, they have never been known to assault or devour humans. They also do not eat fruits or vegetables usually. Gray wolves don’t eat bugs, grasshoppers, spiders, butterflies, bats, insects or invertebrates.
